Welcome to Squires' Richmond Boys Basketball
website. Richmond's first AAU Boys Basketball Program founded
in 1987 by
Tony Squire. Tony has dedicated over 20 years of his young
life to developing a fine Program for hundreds of players
across the state of Virginia as well as surrounding states.
Overview
The Squires' program was organized in response to the challenge
to increase opportunities for young men to develop teamwork,
self-confidence and self-esteem, through structured athletic
activities. The Foundation encourages our youth to stay in
school by stressing the link between class work and home
work, studying, and career and educational achievement.
We strive to enhance the schools and community’s efforts
to meet the social and educational needs of our young people.
The participants range in age from 12 to 19. Most are from
Richmond, some from other parts of Virginia, and a few from
surrounding states.
Our primary support comes from family, friends and the community.
The parents/guardians have witnessed first hand the benefits
of the program, and are among our strongest supporters. It
is not unusual for them to travel long distances, taking
participants to practice sessions and to games.
Since 1987, more than 300 young men have received scholarships
from colleges and universities; 150 have received scholarships
to attend prep schools. Some have gained worldwide recognition,
including prominent NBA players Ray
Allen and Kevin
Garnett of the Boston Celtics, and Amare
Stoudemire of the Phoenix
Suns; two NFL players, Darren
Sharper of the Minnesota Vikings
and Johnathan
Lewis of the Jacksonville Jaguars. In addition,
75 athletics have participated in the International Pro League
in Europe.
Objectives
- To develop self-esteem, self-confidence, and respect for
self and others.
- To encourage scholarship, teamwork and the enhancement
of athletic ability.
- To provide enrichment experiences through group dynamics,
clinics and workshops.
- To provide opportunities to interact with role models
and community leaders for insight and guidance on how to
realize career goals.
- To provide consistent opportunities for participants to
excel academically and athletically to qualify and compete
for scholarships.
Youth Development
We believe that a strong academic foundation,
good character, respect, hard work, self
determination and loyalty are the building blocks for success.
We mentor, teach and encourage participants
to believe and invest in themselves, to
take full advantage of educational opportunities, and be
accountable for their actions.
On and off the court, we provide leadership training and
enrichment experiences through team play, camps and clinics
such as AIDS Awareness. We also have a prison ministry where
participants visit the jails and talk with the inmates.
Competition and Experiences
One of the program’s greatest strengths is the opportunity
for our youth to participate in challenging and competitive
events throughout the country. We have participated in tournaments
in over 30 states over the past 20 years. This allows interaction
with players, coaches and the audiences from different cultural
and socio-economic background and various athletic abilities.
They learn first hand the importance of team play, being
supportive of each other, and how to be gracious and professional
whether winning or losing.
Outreach
Over the past 20 years, we have started
programs in other areas: Squires’ Northern Neck in Montrose, VA; Squires’ Midwest in Waterloo,
Iowa; Squires’ Sumpter in South Carolina; Squires’ Charles City
and Squire’s Powhatan.
Accomplishments
The team and Tony Squire have enjoyed many successes and
participated in many learning experiences, and are proud
of their achievements.
The Team has –
- Qualified for the National AAU Championship games since
the organization was founded.
- Won position playoffs in numerous State AAU championship
games
- Participated yearly in a sponsored national invitational
tournament.
Acknowledgements
Our foremost advocates and life-long link have been parents/guardians,
schools and the community. They have always showcased their spirit and support
for the AAU by attending games, participating in events and
staying connected. Much of what the organization has accomplished
is because of them.

Virginia Basketball
Dave Leitao – Head Coach
Richmond is like many cities across the country. The area
has tremendous talent, but without someone like yourself
helping to expose that talent, many kids would be left without
the opportunity for a free education and to further their
athletic careers.

Rob Lanier – Assistant Coach
We all strive for doing well in our lives and Tony Squire
has exemplified good in his everyday walk of life by giving
