Squires
16U team coached by Antone Exum began its run to a "three-peat"
by winning the regional tournament inconvincing fashion.
The two-time state champions went 5-0 and averaged 76
pts/game with a 17 pt. average margin of victory.
Game 1--
Squires 73 Suffolk 43
Excellent defensive effort by the Squires holding Suffolk
to 33% FG and outrebounding them 36-21. Scorers led
by Darek
Mitchell (19) and Cameron Stanley (17) while Bombale
Osby added 11 rebounds.
Game 2--
Squires 85 Spotsylvania 66
Scorers led by Jarhon Giddings with 17 and Mitchell
and Osby with 11 each. Kevin Allen chipped in 9 pts
off the bench. Osby also grabbed 8 rebounds to lead
the team. L.C. Baker was the playmaker with 7 assists.
Game 3--
Squires 57 Chesapeake 52
Squires struggled through a poor shooting night with
strong defense and dominating board play to win a close
one. They held the Chesapeake team to 25% FG shooting,
22% behind the arc, and out-rebounded them 31-17 on
the defensive boards. Stanley led the scoring with 12
pts and 7 rebs; Paul Velander scored 9 pts on 3 for
4 from behind the arc including a 75-foot shot at the
halftime buzzer; and Osby put in 9, most which were
earned at the charity stripe with the game on the line.
Game 4--
Squires 92 MetroSouth 72
Squires overcame a poor-shooting first quarter, as well
as a 13 pt second quarter deficit, to win a spot in
the championship game. The team shot 30% FG with 2 for
8 from 3 point land in the first quarter while MetroSouth
connected on 7-15 three balls in the first half. The
second half was a different story with Squires shooting
a torrid 66%, including 6 of 9 from behind the arc.
Six players were in double figures scoring, led by Kenny
Rivers with 17 and Mitchell
with 17. Stanley contributed 12 pts, including 5-5 FG
in the 2nd quarter comeback run.
Justin Fitzgerald chipped in 11, Baker put in 10,
and Casey Corner grabbed 9 rebs to go with his 10pts.
Game 5--
Squires 73 Metrosouth 61
Squires cruised to a regional championship over a tired
MetroSouth team with pressure defense and quick transition
offense. A valiant effort from the MetroSouth team in
the second half kept a 44-18 halftime score from becoming
a blowout.
Scorers were lead by Giddings with 21(team tournament
high) and Mitchell
with 15, including 3 of 5 tre's.
Look for Squires Exum to continue its run at the State
tourney in two weeks.
