Basketball Tidbits: DIVISION I BOARD OF DIRECTORS APPROVES BASKETBALL PROPOSALS Nov. 6, 2001

INDIANAPOLIS---Summer evaluation of men's basketball prospects will continue for at least an additional two years under a set of reform bylaws approved today by the NCAA Division I Board of Directors. The Board's action reversed a bylaw change from April 2000 that would have eliminated summer evaluation in 2002.The Board amended the package that had come from the Men's Basketball Issues Subcommittee to say that at the end of the two years the Board will receive a report from the subcommittee on the effect of the new bylaws on the basketball-recruiting environment. Specifically, the proposals would: Strengthen the process for certifying summer basketball events, including a requirement for comprehensive educational and mentoring activities as well as disclosure of financial information about the sources of funds for the events and how they are allocated (01-51).

Alter the Division I men's basketball recruiting calendar to reflect a summer evaluation period of two 10-day periods separated by a four-day dead period (July 8 to 17 and July 22 to 31); to permit one telephone call to a prospect during the month of March of the junior year; to permit one recruiting contact with a prospect during the April contact period of this junior year, to be included in the five permissible recruiting opportunities; to allow official visits beginning January 1 of the junior year; to establish 40 as the number of evaluation days during the academic year; and to eliminate evaluations during the fall contact period except for activities at the prospect's educational institution (01-52, as amended).

Prohibit university staff members who are attending certified summer events from having contact with a prospect's coach or other individuals associated with the prospect. The proposal also prohibits unofficial visits during July (01-53).

Require Division I colleges and universities to publicly disclose information about the financial relationships among institutions,
corporations and coaches of prospects. Institutions that do not disclose the information will not be permitted to participate in the July
evaluation period (01-54).

Recommended reading for the basketball purest and those who love literature:

Black Planet: Facing Race during an NBA Season by David L. Shields. Highly recommended for those who love the NBA and would like insight into a NBA a season. The writer followed the Seattle SuperSonics for an entire season. For those who have an interest in race relations, the NBA culture is the perfect sociological study. Buy.

Hoop Roots by John Edgar Wideman. You can't go wrong with anything Wideman writes. Many don't know that he
is a former player at the University of Penn. He was a good player but he is a great, great writer. Excellent literature. If this is the first time you have read Wideman, you will probably go read everything else he has written. Yes, he is that good. Basketball has been his passion for nearly fifty years.

Congratulations to Petersburg, Virginia's native son Moses Malone on his enshrinement into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. It seems like yesterday that I was watching Moses led Petersburg high to two state titles and my beloved Sixers to there last NBA crown.

West Virginia University point guard Tim Lyles will likely miss the 2001-02 season after tearing a ligament in his knee. SQUIRE alumni and WVU freshman Jonathan Hargett considered one of the top high school players in the nation last year, will likely replace Lyles and start at the point guard. Speaking of Hargett, he posted a team best 36-inch vertical leap in preseason fitness testing.

Temple receives oral commitment from Oak Hill Academy star 6-7 Antywane Robinson. He is a native of Charlotte, NC. Blue Ridge Academy, VA 6-9 Alou Kane is considering SMU, Minnesota and North Carolina. DeAngelo Collins 6-9 Inglewood HS(Calf.) will most likely enter his name in the 2002 NBA draft. He and SQUIRE alumni Amare Stoudemire appear to be the top two high schools players that will apply for the NBA draft at this time.

UVA point guard Majestic Mapp will undergo season-ending knee surgery and miss a second straight year with the team. Former UVA point guard Harold Deane has been invited to try out with the Roanoke Dazzle of the NBDL(National Basketball Development League) Starting salary for the league is $27,900 per year. The Dazzle is having an open tryout on Oct. 13 that is limited to 100 players and you must register by Oct 11. Call the Dazzle at 540-226-1000 for registration information.

Hampton Roads Virginia officials have begun tentative discussions with the Charlotte Hornets about moving the troubled NBA franchise to Hampton Roads. This area of Virginia is determined to land a major professional league franchise. Good luck. I believe that if professional basketball on the NBA level comes to Virginia that it will be a success.

Derrick Character 6-8 and a 8th grader from Scotch Plains, NJ is being touted as the best player nationally in his age group(14U).

Football Tidbits:

SQUIRE Basketball players continue to shine on the football field. Jelani Lawrence(6'6" / Blue Ridge) catches 2 touchdown passes in victory. His fellow SQUIRE teammate and Blue Ridge classmate Jerome Day(6'5") also catches a touchdown pass. These two SQUIRE players have led Blue Ridge to a 4-0 record so far this season. Not to be out done by his SQUIRE
teammates, Vern Hamilton(Benedictine) scores 4 touchdowns, 7 receptions, 8 tackles, 2 interceptions and 1 fumble recovery in Benedictine's latest victory. This was the second time this year Hamilton has had a 4 touchdown game. Lawrence, Day and Hamilton were members of the SQUIRE's 16U team this past year. They will be reunited again this spring and summer as members of the SQUIRE's 17U team. These young men are being recruited in Basketball and Football on the collegiate level.

We had the opportunity to watch the best middle school football player in the Ricmond,Va metro area yesterday, Griifient Yancy Jr. was spectacular, scoring 4 touchdowns and rushing for over 250 yds. in only one half of play leading Brookland Middle to a 38-0 victory over Stonewall Middle. Yancy is a SQUIRE b-baller also and will be attending Hermitage HS next year.

Timothy Pierce another SQUIRE player also was playing with Brookland. Tim is rated as the top basketball guard in the county of Henrico. SQUIRE Vern Hamilton of Benedictine had another productive day on the gridiron scoring 4 touchdowns last week. He also is the second leading receiver in the Richmond metro area.

There are a number of former SQUIRE basketball players that are having a big time impact on the Richmond prep football scene and are Div 1 football prospects. They include: J.Lewis & T, Rogers (Varina), Nick Washington (Manchester), K.Bridy & J.Carrinton (Monacan), Marlon Smith (Armstrong), B. Myles (Goochland). These you men made the decision to focus on football but will always be part of the SQUIRE family.
