Virginia Commonwealth University signs 6'6" Troy Godman from Allegany(MD) CC. He is described as one of the widest (not fat) players seen in the past couple years. He has good post moves and should be an immediate impact player for the Rams

Hampton University has added its fifth recruit in 6'3 Jeff Granger from Creedmore (Faith Christian) NC.   We're talking about a great outside shooter who should provide the perfect complement to all the inside players that head coach Steve Merfeld and his staff landed earlier this fall.  If you will recall, the Pirates got commitments from 6'9 Bakary Konate from Cincinnati State (JC) OH, 6'7 Troy Washington from Denmark (Denmark-Olar) SC, and 6'8 Rodney Hughes from Owens (JC) MI, plus they have 6'11 Bruce Brown from Richmond (Henrico) VA, who originally signed with Duquesne at year ago, but who is sitting out as a Prop 48 casualty.  The addition of Granger, who is a 5th year player orginially from Newark, NJ, moves Hampton's recruiting class up to #29 nationally on our list of the Top Recruiting Classes To-Date.  In other words, Merfeld has done a great job of building on the success his team had last March.  Remember, Hampton pulled off one of the most stunning upsets ever in the NCAA Tournament eight months ago when the knocked off Iowa State in the first round

Hampton University pulled off one of the biggest upsets in NCAA history last March, but, even more important, Pirates head coach Steve Merfeld and his staff have been able to capitalize on their success on the recruiting trail.  If you will recall, a year ago Hampton's recruiting class finished ranked #1 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference by the HOOP SCOOP when they landed 6'5 Devin Green from Columbia (Beechcroft) OH and 6'3 Tihon Johnson from Columbus (East) OH, both of whom were ranked among the top 200 nationally and were good enough to attract some Big-10 attention.  And this fall Hampton has stockpiled size, as 6'9 Bakary Konate from Cincinnati State (JC) OH, 6'7 Rodney Hughes from Owens (JC) OH, 6'7 Troy Washington from Denmark (Denmark-Olar) SC, and 6'11 Brian Brown from Richmond (Henrico) VA all recently have made verbal commitments.  Konate is a big time athlete with good ball skills, excellent 3-point shooting range, and the ability to run the court like a deer.  This explains why schools like Louisville, Cincinnati, Memphis, East Carolina, Iowa State, and Marquette were all showing interest a year ago.   However, Konate needed another semester in order to graduate from junior college and, as a result, he slipped through the cracks.  The same situation applies to Hughes, who at 6'7, 250 lbs., is a physical presence and a warrior inside.  In other words, Merfeld will have two players who will transfer in and enroll second semester  This is important, because they will be able to practice every day with the team.   And Merfeld will have another player who is already in school.  That's right!   Brown, who was a top 300 senior nationally when he originally signed with Duquesne a year ago, is a Prop 48 casualty.  Although NCAA rules prohibit Prop 48 casualties from practicing with the team, this physical specimen with great hands and mobility should emerge into one of the best big men in the league down the road.   Washington, who is a consensus top 200 senior nationally, is another outstanding athlete and he can play either forward spot.

UNC, Nike extend contract for eight years. UNC and Nike have agreed on an eight year contract worth $28.34 million.

A made for television move, " A Season On the Brink," is scheduled for March 10 on ESPN. The movie is based on the book by the same name written by John Feinstein. It chronicles the 1985-86 season of the Indiana Hoosiers the year before they won the national championship. This is a super book and it is an inside look on the personality of Bobby Knight and his relationships with people. After reading the book, the question is, would you let your son play for coach Knight? This is too good of a book to be a made for television movie.Who will play Bobby Knight?

The CIAA Basketball Tournament will stay in Raleigh, NC for 2003, 2004 and 2005. The tournament is played at Raleigh's Entertainment and Sports Arena (ESA). This is the best post season college basketball tournament around.

    SQUIRE Reports : October 22, 2001

Three former SQUIRE players are projected to play a major role for the University of West Virginia this year. Senior Chris Moss(Hermitage HS) will start at the power forward position. Freshman Jonathan Hargett(Highland Springs) will start at the point. Freshman Tyrone Sally(Meadowbrook HS) is expected to contribute heavily. He is expected to get enough playing time to show his strong athletic skills.

The Sporting News rates Missouri's Kareem Rush and St. Joseph's Marvin O'Conner as two of the most underrated players in college basketball. They both can play and appear to have an NBA future.

Duke is talking about an undefeated season.

Everyone is awaiting the debut of Dajuan Wagner at the Univ. of Memphis. Early indications are he is the complete ballplayer. He is known for his scoring but has shown excellent passing ability in early practices.

Billy Edelin the projected starting point guard for Syracuse University has been suspended from school and will not play college ball this season.

    SQUIRE Reports : October 15, 2001

Terry Licorish and Steven Leven both of Laurinburg(NC) both have made if official for Auburn.

University of Kentucky forward Jason Parker will miss the up coming basketball season after reinjuring his surgically repaired right knee before a Midnight madness celebration.

7-3 former SQUIRE player Luke Minor(Hagerstown, MD.,CC) visits Virginia Tech. this weekend. This could be a big recruit for next years class if Tech can get the commitment.

Former SQUIRE player Winston Brooks is slated to start at point guard for Gonzaga. Remember, Gonzaga made it to the sweet 16 in 2000 and 2001. They play a tough non league schedule this year. Squirebball.com will be at the Gonzaga vs St. Joseph's game in Philly on Dec.31. Gonzaga will have 22 of their 29 regular-season games televised either locally, regionally or nationally.

Norfolk State University has gotten a commitment from Spencer Ross(St. John's River CC/ Fla.) 5-10 point guard who attended Western Branch HS and led the Hampton Roads Area in scoring during the 1999-2000 season. Coach Will Jones is doing a fine recruiting job at NSU. Remember , Jones was Lefty Driesel's top assistant and recruiter at Maryland. Jones won a NCAA Div.II championship at UDC. Three former SQUIRE players will be playing for NSU this year, freshmen Hiraman Byrd and Joemi Byrd along with sophomore Nick Byrd. They are all related and attended Hopewell High,VA. NSU will make a run for the MEAC tittle. Remember, they beat Hampton last year.

Travis Garrison(DeMatha) commits to Maryland. He choose Maryland or Miami. I remember Travis and JJ Riddeck going head to head in a 14U SQUIRE tournament. Back then, you could see the potential in both of these players. Travis was playing with DC Assault and JJ was with the Roanoke Jaguars. JJ put on a 3 pt. shooting exhibition people are still talking about. Travis could not be stopped but JJ took home the MVP.

The Kentucky Wildcats get commitment from 6-5 Antwain Barbour from Wasbash Junior College. he is a native of Elizabethtown, KY.

Boston College gets verbal commitment from the athletic 6-4 Jason Forte a WG from Bay Springs(MS).

Three top 50 players have not committed yet. Sean May 6-8, the son of former Indiana star Scoot May, Sani Ibrahim 6-10(OAK HILL) and 6-8 Jason Fraser(Amityville,NY). The rumor mill has Louisville coming on real strong with Fraser. Rick Pitino is the master recruiter and nobody turns down Rick. Stay tuned for more on this situation.

Louisville will have the best looking uniforms in college basketball this year. Adidas has gone all out for the Cardinals. Check them out. It will be a hot seller. If Louisville wins, look out.

6-9 Terry Licorish and 6-4 Steven Leven both of Laurinburg Institute(NC) are considering Auburn. 5-11 Terrance Whittier and 6-6 Cortez Davis are both still enrolled at Laurinburg, they had considered transferring to Mt. Zion(NC). Whitter is considering Loyola Chicago, Rhode Island and South Carolina. Davis is looking at Miami and Florida State.
