Area Top Player Are'nt Guarantee a Future in Basketball

It’s no longer good enough to be the best player in your state or region if you plane on having a career in the NBA and in some cases a college basketball career as well. Foreign basketball player are making sure of that as their number continue to rise in the NBA 1st round draft every year and players begin to show up in greater numbers in our colleges and universities around the country.

Younger basketball players in the USA will have to set higher standards to remain at the top of the NBA draft as we saw the first foreign basketball player in history be selected in the first round of the 2006 NBA draft. Out of 60 players in the 2005 draft, 14 where foreign, 2006 saw an increase in 1st round draft picks from 4 to six foreign ball players, all positions previously held by kids in America. Like every aspect of life jobs are now global.

According to scouts, foreign basketball players have a few advantages; the players abroad are not one dimensional like most of the players in the USA. These European players develop skill in every aspect of the game giving them multi dimensional capabilities. Height is not a factor when determining they type of skill a player will learn. Each and every player will learn the same skills which lead to a more versatile player. In Europe, players join basketball clubs at a young age and stay with that club into their teenage years. If they are good enough, they turn professional as early as 15 or 16. Hot shot basket ball players are grounded by mature players and see limited minutes in these leagues.

The American ball players have much to compete with when the playing field is not in their favor with all the NCAA rules and regulations in place. The USA system is attached to education that is of greater value to our player. Player can take advantage of getting a solid education in addition to playing a sport. Balance is everything here in the USA if the player chooses to take advantage of this great opportunity.

If kids in American want to compete they must find the time to get most out of themselves without sacrificing their education. They will have to focus on mastering their fundamentals skills at a young age in their sport and education to be successful. Fundamental are hurting many young American players according to many NBA coaches and universities.

High school and AAU basketball coaches must do more to teach skills and fundamental to their players. USA players must become stewards of the game if they plan on having a college or NBA career. It’s all about peak performance and high expectations. The player that gets the most from their ability as humanly possible with the limited time afforded to them.

The international full court press is on; parents will have to begin preparing their kids at an early age to compete in college and the NBA in the future. This mean:

  • Finding the best fundamental academic and sports camp during age of 3 – 14,

  • Encourage practice during the developmental years, especially the summer months,

  • Work with sports and academic programs the emphasis fundamentals skills,

  • Play for a very competitive AAU programs or professional summer league.

  • Always encourage your child to be competitive in every aspect of life,

  • Optimize your body by eating nutritious and balanced diet, and

  • Practice, practice, practice.
