A couple of Squires choose Virginia Tech.
Stokes mines his home turf
Shawn Harris and Allen Calloway commit to play basketball at Virginia Tech.

THE ROANOKE TIMES
Virginia Tech men's basketball coach Ricky Stokes has returned to his Richmond roots for his latest two commitments.
Shawn Harris and Allen Calloway, teammates on the Richmond-based
Squires AAU team, committed to the Hokies after visiting Blacksburg this
weekend.
Harris, a 6-foot-4 guard, was named Times-Dispatch player of the year
as a senior last year at Matoaca High School. Harris currently is enrolled
at Fork Union Military Academy.
Calloway originally committed to Tech last fall, before his senior
year at Tunstall High School, but elected not to sign. Calloway, a 6-9
post player, subsequently transferred to Coastal Christian Academy in
Virginia Beach, where he is spending a postgraduate season.
Harris and Calloway are the fourth and fifth players to commit to Tech
this fall. The others are 6-8 Philip McCandies from Winston-Salem, N.C.,
6-6 Winston Robinson from Knoxville, Tenn., and 6-5 Markus Sailes from
Varina.
It is possible that Robinson will go to Fork Union in 2002-2003 for a
year of seasoning, but he is expected to sign in November. Harris was one of six players from Virginia invited to the Adidas ABCD Camp this summer, where he was named to the all-star team. "He will be an immediate impact player for the Hokies and we see him in the starting lineup as a freshman," AAU coach Tony Squire said on his Web site. "You have to love a player like Allen. He is very athletic and jumps out of the gym. He can score at will."
Current NCAA rules allow Division I-A teams to add no more than five
players in one year, but legislation has been proposed to amend that.
"Everybody is recruiting over and above the five-scholarship limit,"
Squire said. "One way or another, it always seems to work out."

Times-Dispatch Article

Shawn Harris, last season's Times-Dispatch boys basketball player of the year, committed to play at Virginia Tech after making a visit to
Blacksburg this past weekend.
Harris, who graduated from Matoaca in June, is prepping this year at Fork Union Military Academy.
A four-year starter at Matoaca, the 6-3 Harris averaged 23.8 points, nine rebounds, six assists and two steals.
He scored more than 30 points in six games and was named co-Southside District player of the year.
Harris was an inside player his first three years, but he was given more
opportunities to work on the wing his senior season, and he shot 56
percent from 3-point range.
Also committing to the Hokies was Harris's Squire's AAU teammate Allen Calloway.
