Collecting
coins? Normal
Collecting stamps? Normal
Collecting sneakers? Abnormal
Collecting
sneakers is an unusual hobby to most people. However, not to 22
year old, Melvin Porcher of Richmond, Virginia; it is just a normal,
everyday thing.
Melvin Porcher
is not just a unique collector, but he is a collector of 75+ rare
pairs of sneakers.
His favorite
brands of sneakers are Adidas and Nike.
Melvin started
his collection in 1998, while working at Athlete's Foot.
The newest
sneaker to his collection is the Adidas Signature Pro Model. This
sneaker was donated to him by Squirebball.com. The distinctive feature
of this sneaker is the Squire insignia stitched on the side of the
sneaker.
His most priced
possession is the Olympic Flight Posite Garnett's. Nike only produced
500 pair of this one of a kind sneaker.
The most money
Melvin has ever spent on a pair of sneakers was $180 for the Air
Foam Pros. That is not much by today's standard of sneaker prices.
Sneakers today range from $120-$160.
The weirdest
thing he has ever done for a pair of sneakers was "Getting
up at four in the morning and ordering a pair of sneakers off of
Nike.com" says Melvin. "That was crazy."
If you are
a true die-hard collector, you might be able to understand what
he goes through. Melvin says, "Most people don't understand
my unusual hobby. Only the sneaker fetish people understand."
One wish that
Melvin wants to fulfill is to finish his Michael Jordan sneaker
collection. He is only missing one pair of sneakers, the Air Jordan
II. "I also wish I could get into Michael Jordan's shoe closet.
He has every pair of Jordans that ever came out, and prototypes
that never came out." Now that's a sneaker collection.
